Services

Capstone provides a Custom College List (CCL) service for families of college applicants. Our educational consultants will build a personalized, well balanced list of colleges based on the information provided by you and your student regarding their academic and testing history, and extracurricular involvement, as well as your responses on our student and parent questionnaires.

Families whose students have specific needs or requests that they wish to share more fully with the Consultant or whose students have potentially complex educational requirements or unusual experiences or circumstances are encouraged to purchase the Custom College List Plus (CCL+) service, which includes a one-hour, one-on-one consultation with a Capstone consultant. If you wish to upgrade to the CCL+ package, you will be able to do so at any time within your Capstone account.

Families that wish to purchase additional hours beyond the hour provided as part of the CCL+ package can do so at Capstone’s usual hourly or hourly package rates. Please reach out to Capstone using the “Contact Us” feature in your Capstone account if you wish to purchase additional hours.

Expectations of the Student & Client

Data and Information

We greatly respect our students and families, and our goal is for each of our students to matriculate to a college where they will thrive and form the solid foundation they need to achieve their educational, developmental, and career goals. Experience has shown us that students are more likely to achieve this outcome if they take the process seriously by completing tasks in a thoughtful way. Therefore, taking the time to provide information and documentation to Capstone that is accurate and thorough will help us produce the highest-quality, most appropriate college list for your student.

"Likely" Colleges

Your Capstone Consultant will provide your student with a balanced list of colleges based on the information provided by the student and Client, while also considering information about current trends in college admissions. We predict possible admissions outcomes based on the most recent admissions data, but the admissions landscape is continually shifting. Therefore, we strongly recommend all students apply to at least 2—and potentially 3—”likely” colleges, which are colleges that are more likely to admit than deny your student.

Demonstrated Interest & Understanding

It is also imperative that students apply to colleges they are interested in and would be excited to attend. Therefore, after the student receives their preliminary list of 20 colleges, Capstone would expect the student will do the in-depth research required to ensure that they demonstrate to the college both a deep understanding of the college AND a clear interest in the college, which many colleges use as part of their admissions evaluation.

Financials

Capstone’s consultants will do their best to produce a college list that will meet the family’s needs based on current and historical knowledge of financial aid trends, but like all other aspects of college admissions, these trends can shift. However, if the Client is seeking financial aid, either in the form of need-based aid or merit scholarships, it is the Client’s responsibility to complete the Net Price Calculator (NPC) for each college on the student’s list to obtain preliminary information on their likely cost of attendance. The more detailed the NPC, the more accurate it tends to be.

Communications with Capstone

All parties are expected to interact with each other respectfully, whether by Zoom or email.

Other Factors Impacting Admissions Decisions

College admissions outcomes are impacted by several institutional factors, which can include the number and strength of applicants to a particular college that year, program or major, legacy status, donor status, geography, first-generation status, children of faculty, the family’s ability to pay, evidence of exceptional talent, demonstrated interest and understanding, and other factors known only to the institution. Institutional factors—and the weight assigned to each factor—can vary from year to year, which influences the predictability of admissions decisions.

Colleges that use “holistic” or “comprehensive” admissions methods evaluate applicants using multiple factors that may include GPA, rigor of coursework, grades in specific courses, test scores, essays, activities, letters of recommendation, and artistic or other talent, as well as institutional priorities listed publicly as well as those known only to the institution. Admissions decisions for colleges that select applicants based mainly on meeting minimum academic standards, such as GPA and/or test scores, are generally more predictable than for colleges that use holistic methods. However, those standards can strengthen or weaken over time, depending on whether the pool of applicants is growing or declining in strength or numbers, overall or for particular academic programs.
