Written by Dr. Shelley Enger, former research scientist and Capstone co-founder, the Internship Development Guide (second dition) provides step-by-step guidance with companion worksheets and examples to help students develop their own research internships.

The guide presents the approach Dr. Enger developed over many years helping students obtain their own research internships. Students will learn how to identify researchers in their area of interest who are also likely to be good mentors. They will learn how to study the researcher’s work, write a cover letter, create a résumé, and contact and respond to the mentor. They will also learn about the rights and responsibilities of being an intern and how to make the most of their experience.

While the focus of the Guide is the research internship, the process students learn is broadly applicable to applying for other types of internship and paid jobs. College students who are applying to graduate school or are already in graduate school can also use this process to identify and communicate with a prospective faculty advisor.

Finally, a clear, step-by-step guide to coach students through the process of attaining a research internship from beginning to end!

Dr. Shelley Enger has always been my go-to for all STEM related questions. Her robust professional background in STEM means she has firsthand knowledge about these disciplines and her extensive experience supporting STEM students means she has perfected her process guiding students who are interested in pursuing these disciplines.

The Internship Development Guide is filled with actionable advice, from how to determine what kind of research internship the student would want to how to part ways with the research mentor when the research internship wraps up, in addition to worksheets and sample/template cover letters and correspondence that students can adapt for their own use. Regardless of student’s experience level with research and/or finding opportunities, the guide provides the necessary support to walk students through the process of finding research mentors and creating research internships for themselves.

In addition to attaining research internships, which is the best outcome of following this guide, a great benefit of the guide is how students are learning important life skills, like how to cold-call/email to seek out opportunities, how and when to send follow up and thank you correspondence, and how to pitch their qualifications and skills to others.

I’m incredibly excited that all students now have a way to access Dr. Enger’s knowledge and experience with this guide!
